A PHYLLITE STONE STELE DEPICTING VISHNU

North-East-India, Pala period, 12th c.H. 48,5 cm
The stele is sculpted in high relief with Vishnu standing in samabhanga on a lotus flower placed on a base with a pair of worshippers to its front, his principle hands in varadamudra and supporting the shankha, both secondary ones with gada and cakra, wearing dhoti, garland and bejewelled, his face displaying a serene expression with almond-shaped eyes, his head topped with the kiritamakuta, flanked by Shri Devi holding fly-whisk and Sarasvati the vina and the upper section with a pair of gandharvas extending garlands, the base incised with short inscription.
